The ATS E50A also features improvements to simplify your work, such as a built-in calibrated test point to validate your tester before each use; a battery monitor to warn you early before your tester fails; and a silent mode that only alerts you when broken points occur; no more incessant buzzer noise while you're testing.
The new E50A measures the inductance of the magneto coil, which is the correct test method. Therefore, if the magneto exhibits excessive resistance (over 100 ohms), which may be due to burnt windings or poor internal connections, the new E50A will not respond to the fault. Similarly, if the magneto exhibits very low inductance (less than 0.01 mH), which may be due to an internal short circuit or a faulty bypass capacitor, the new E50A will not respond until the fault is resolved.
In summary, the new E50A is designed to operate only when the following conditions are met:
It is properly connected to the magneto.
The magneto does not exhibit high resistance (> 100 ohms), a sign of open windings. The magneto does not exhibit low inductance (< 0.01 mH), a sign of shorted windings.
Older E50 models were capable of detecting faults (a) and sometimes (c), but not (b).

The built-in test point is designed to be an electronic approximation of the primary circuit of a real magneto (i.e., with similar inductance, capacitance, and resistance). Using the test point is therefore the best way to confirm the operational capability of your E50A before use.
